Monitor specs are filled with numbers that marketing makes sound more important than they are, and some that genuinely matter. Let's separate signal from noise.
Refresh Rate: How Often the Image Updates
Refresh rate (Hz) is how many times per second your monitor draws a new frame. A 144Hz monitor shows 144 unique frames per second maximum. If your GPU renders 200 FPS, you're still limited to 144 unique images without adaptive sync.
The jump from 60Hz to 144Hz is dramatic and immediately noticeable for anyone who games. The jump from 144Hz to 240Hz is noticeable to competitive players. Beyond 240Hz, most people cannot reliably distinguish the difference in casual testing, though pro players in CS2 or Valorant do perceive and report benefit from 360Hz.
Response Time: How Fast Pixels Change
Response time measures how quickly a pixel transitions from one colour to another. 1ms GtG (grey-to-grey) sounds impressive, but marketing response times are measured under ideal conditions and often involve aggressive overdrive settings that create inverse ghosting — where pixels overshoot their target colour and leave bright coronas around moving objects.
Real-world panel response performance matters more than the spec sheet number. IPS panels at 1ms are often more accurate at 2ms with mild overdrive.
Panel Type Matters More Than Either Number
TN panels: fastest response, worst colours and viewing angles. VA panels: excellent contrast, moderate response. IPS panels: excellent colours and viewing angles, good response. OLED: best contrast and response, highest cost.
For competitive gaming: IPS at 165–240Hz or TN at 240Hz+. For content creation and mixed use: IPS. For cinematic gaming and deep blacks: OLED if budget allows.
