You have filled your fast NVMe drive with games and projects, and now you want somewhere cheap to dump a growing media library, a pile of backups, or a years-long photo archive. Mechanical hard drives are still the answer for that kind of bulk storage, but plugging one in is not always as simple as it used to be. Many modern cases have quietly reduced or removed their 3.5-inch drive bays, so adding bulk storage now sometimes means retrofitting a cage or bracket yourself.

HDDs win on one thing above all else: naira per gigabyte. A mechanical drive gives you several terabytes for the price NVMe charges for a fraction of that, which makes it ideal for storage where speed barely matters. Think media libraries, system and photo backups, project archives, and home-server style use where the data sits and waits rather than loading a game.

Why Your Case Might Be Missing the Bays

To improve front-to-back airflow and keep the interior looking clean, many manufacturers have stripped out the old stacked drive cages that used to sit behind the front fans.

What Actually Fits
Before you buy anything, look closely at the spare mounting points inside your case and measure your clearances. A cage must not clash with your graphics card, your PSU cables, or your front fans. Your options usually fall into one of these:
- Modular drive cages. Some cases include or sell a removable 3.5-inch cage that slots back into a designated mount. Check whether your exact case model offers one before assuming you can add it.
- Universal brackets. A generic 3.5-inch bracket or cage that screws onto spare holes, the floor, or the basement of the case. Flexible, but you must confirm the screw holes line up.
- 5.25-inch adapters. If your case still has an old optical bay, a 3.5-inch-to-5.25-inch adapter lets you use it. This is rare on modern cases but worth checking.
- The PSU shroud or basement. The covered area over the power supply is a very common spot for one or two drive mounts and keeps drives out of the main airflow path.
The Thermal, Dust and Noise Trade-Offs
Adding drives is not free in terms of heat or comfort, so position them thoughtfully rather than wherever they happen to fit:
- Heat and airflow. HDDs run warm, and a wall of drives stacked behind your front intake fans blocks the cool air everything else depends on. A drive stack in the airflow path warms the whole system, so avoid choking your intake.
- Noise and vibration. Hard drives are mechanical and they hum and vibrate. Use the case's rubber grommets or anti-vibration mounts so that buzz does not transfer into the chassis.
- Dust. More drives mean more surfaces and more fans pulling air through, so your build collects dust faster and needs cleaning more often.
The balance to strike is capacity against airflow. A drive or two tucked in the basement is fine; a full wall of drives across your intake is not.
Doing the Install
Once you have the right cage or bracket and a clear spot for it, the install itself is straightforward:
- Power off the system and unplug it from the wall before opening the case.
- Mount the cage or bracket to your chosen point using the screws supplied with the case.
- Slide the 3.5-inch drive into place, using the rubber grommets to cut down vibration.
- Connect the SATA data cable from the drive to a free SATA port on your motherboard.
- Connect a SATA power lead from the PSU to the drive.
- Boot into Windows, open Disk Management, then initialise and format the drive exactly as you would any new data drive.
