You drop a clip onto the timeline, add a touch of noise reduction and a colour grade, and suddenly playback crawls along at three frames per second. Before you start pricing a new PC, understand this: DaVinci Resolve has a built-in answer to stuttering playback, and most editors on modest hardware never switch it on properly. It is called caching, and once you understand it, a humble machine can edit footage that looks far beyond its weight class.
Caching is Resolve's way of pre-rendering the heavy parts of your timeline to disk so they play back instantly, rather than recalculating every effect on the fly. What caching actually does
When playback stutters, it is because your computer cannot decode the footage and calculate every effect fast enough to deliver each frame on time. Caching solves this by doing the hard work once, in the background, and saving the result to disk. After that, Resolve simply reads the finished frames back, which any drive can do smoothly. You trade a little disk space and a short wait for editing that feels effortless.
Resolve gives you two main mechanisms, and they tackle the problem from different angles:
- Render cache pre-renders the heavy effects on your timeline — transitions, noise reduction, Fusion compositions and complex grades.
- Optimised media creates lighter, easier-to-decode versions of your source clips, so even raw 4K footage plays back without choking your processor.
Most editors benefit from using both together. Optimised media keeps your base footage smooth, and render cache mops up the effects you add on top.
Render cache modes, explained
You will find the render cache setting under the Playback menu. There are three modes, and choosing the right one is the single most useful thing in this article:
- None — caching is off and Resolve calculates everything live. This is the default, and it is why your timeline stutters.
- Smart — Resolve automatically decides which parts of the timeline are heavy enough to be worth caching, and quietly renders them in the background. For most editors this is the correct setting and the one to leave on.
- User — you manually mark specific clips or zones to cache by right-clicking them. Useful when you want fine control, but more fiddly day to day.
Switch to Smart and Resolve does the thinking for you. Above the timeline you will see a thin coloured line: red means a section still needs rendering, and blue means it is cached and ready to play smoothly. Leave the machine alone for a moment after editing and watch the red turn blue — that is your timeline becoming buttery.
Optimised media and where it fits
Optimised media is Resolve's answer to demanding source files. Long-GOP formats from mirrorless cameras, or heavy 4K and 6K footage, are hard to decode in real time even before you add a single effect. Optimised media solves this by generating a lower-resolution, easier-to-handle copy of each clip that Resolve plays in place of the original while you edit.
You set the format and resolution in your project settings, then right-click the clips you want and choose Generate Optimised Media. Resolve handles the rest in the background. When it comes time to export, Resolve automatically reaches back to the full-quality originals, so your final render loses nothing. The hardware point that makes or breaks it
Here is where many Nigerian editors trip up. Both render cache and optimised media live as files on disk, and Resolve reads and writes them constantly while you work. If that disk is slow — a tired old hard drive or a budget SATA SSD shared with everything else — you have simply moved the bottleneck rather than removed it. A slow cache drive defeats the entire purpose.
The fix is to point your cache at a fast NVMe SSD. You set the cache location in Resolve's preferences under Media Storage, and the optimised-media location in project settings. A practical setup on a modest budget looks like this: a small, fast NVMe drive dedicated to cache and optimised media, separate from the drive holding your source footage. Splitting the read and write load across two drives keeps both flowing freely. Other tricks for instant smoothness
Caching takes a moment to render. When you want playback to be smooth right now — say you are scrubbing through rushes for a first cut — drop the timeline proxy mode to half or quarter resolution from the Playback menu. Resolve plays a lower-resolution preview instantly, with no rendering wait at all, and your export stays full quality. Many editors keep proxy mode on while cutting and switch it off for fine grading.
None of this replaces the rest of your machine. A capable GPU still does the heavy lifting on grades and Fusion, and sufficient RAM keeps everything responsive.
