Every year, roughly between November and February, the Harmattan rolls down from the Sahara and changes the air across Nigeria. All PCs accumulate dust over time, but Harmattan dust behaves differently. It is exceptionally fine, so it slips past loose gaps, settles in thin even layers, and reaches places ordinary household dust never would. Once inside, it does real damage to cooling performance in a few connected ways.
- It insulates your heatsinks. A layer of dust on a CPU or graphics-card heatsink acts like a blanket, trapping heat against the very fins that are meant to shed it. Temperatures climb steadily as the layer thickens.
- It coats and slows fans. Dust builds up on fan blades and bearings, making them work harder and move less air, which means even more heat with even less cooling.
- It clogs filters and vents. Airflow drops as intakes choke, so the system runs hotter and the fans spin louder to compensate.
- It becomes conductive grime. Combined with any humidity, settled dust can turn into a slightly conductive film across components and circuit boards — exactly what you do not want near live electronics.

Dust Filters and Positive Air Pressure: The Core Defence
The single most effective thing you can do is control where air enters the case. Your aim is for every breath your PC takes to pass through a filter, and for no air to sneak in through unfiltered cracks.
This is achieved with positive air pressure: setting up your fans so there is slightly more intake than exhaust, with every intake covered by a dust filter. Because the inside of the case is at marginally higher pressure than the room, air is pushed out through any gaps rather than sucked in through them. Dust can then only enter through the filters you control — and those you can clean.
- Choose a case with proper dust filters on all intakes — front, top and the bottom or PSU intake.
- Run more intake fans than exhaust fans so the case holds positive pressure.
- Make sure unfiltered openings (rear vents, top vents) are exhaust, not intake.

A Tighter Cleaning Cadence for Dust Season

- Power off completely and unplug from the wall before opening anything.

- Hold each fan still while you blow it — do not let the blades spin freely, as a fast-spun fan can damage itself.

- Wash removable filters with water, dry them fully, and refit them only once completely dry.
- Work outdoors or by an open door so you are not simply moving dust around the room.

Watch Your Temperatures, Adjust Your Fans
Dust buildup is gradual and invisible, but its effect shows up clearly in your temperatures. Keep an eye on CPU and GPU temps through the season, and let them tell you when a clean is due. If idle or load temperatures start creeping above where they sat in October, that is dust talking — open the case and clear it out.

Where you put the PC matters as much as how you maintain it. Dust is heaviest near the floor, so lifting the tower onto a desk, shelf or stand means it draws in noticeably cleaner air.
