The Intel vs AMD debate has become nuanced enough that the simple answer — "AMD is better value" or "Intel is faster" — no longer holds up. The right choice depends on your workload, your platform preferences, and how you think about the build long-term.
Current Platform Summary
Intel LGA1700 (12th/13th/14th Gen): Established platform. Supports DDR4 or DDR5. Strong single-thread performance. Good for gaming and workloads that favour clock speed over core count. The 14th gen refresh delivered incremental improvements over 13th gen.
Intel LGA1851 (Core Ultra 200 Series): New platform requiring DDR5. Intel's current flagship. NPU (neural processing unit) for AI-accelerated tasks. Strong performance but at a premium.
AMD AM4 (Ryzen 3000/5000): Mature platform, widely supported, DDR4. The 5000 series remains excellent value. Platform is reaching end-of-life for new CPU releases, but existing hardware is excellent.
AMD AM5 (Ryzen 7000/9000): Current AMD platform, DDR5 only. Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" offers strong IPC improvements. AM5 is AMD's long-term platform with extended support promised.
For Gamers
Gaming performance between Intel 13th/14th gen Core i5/i7 and AMD Ryzen 7000 is extremely close. For pure gaming, either platform works excellently. Intel holds a slight single-thread lead in some titles; AMD leads in others. Practically: choose based on price at time of purchase.
For Creative Professionals
High core count workloads (video export, 3D rendering, compilation) favour AMD Ryzen 9 series — more cores at a given price point. Single-threaded workloads (Revit viewport, AutoCAD, DaVinci Resolve editing) are close enough that either works.
For AI/ML
CPU matters less than GPU for ML training. Either platform works. If your workflow is CPU-heavy (data preprocessing, inference on CPU), AMD Ryzen 9 provides more cores per naira.
Platform Longevity
AM5 has AMD's long-term commitment for future CPU compatibility. LGA1700 is likely end-of-life for new CPUs. If you plan to upgrade CPU in 2-3 years without changing motherboard, AM5 is the better choice.
