Abuja's tech market has grown fast. There are now dozens of vendors claiming to build custom PCs in Wuse, Garki, Maitama, and Kubwa. How do you tell the serious builders from the phone-market resellers?
The Difference Between a PC Builder and a PC Reseller
A reseller buys pre-assembled systems wholesale and marks them up. A builder selects components individually, assembles them, tests every connection, and stands behind the result. The distinction matters because:
- A reseller can't help you when a component fails two months later
- A reseller often can't tell you why certain components were selected
- A builder can spec the right system for your specific workflow
- A builder provides documentation: serial numbers, component receipts, test results
Questions to Ask Before You Pay
When evaluating any PC builder in Abuja, ask these questions:
- "What's the warranty, and how do I claim it?" — A legitimate builder will give you a clear answer: 12 months parts and labour, bring it in, here's the contact.
- "Can I see the components before you assemble?" — The answer should be yes. You should be able to verify your GPU is an RTX 4070 and not an OEM variant.
- "Are the parts new?" — Nothing wrong with refurbished if it's disclosed. The problem is when used parts are sold as new.
- "Do you do a POST test and burn-in?" — Quality builders run a system for hours under load before delivery. This catches 90% of early-life failures.
- "What PSU brand and model are you using?" — If they can't name it immediately, that's a warning sign.
Common Red Flags
- No physical address or registered business — only WhatsApp and Instagram
- Prices that seem impossibly low — a legitimately configured RTX 4070 system cannot be ₦500,000
- Unwillingness to show receipts for components
- No warranty in writing
- Pressure to pay 100% upfront before build begins
Why Local Matters in Abuja
Abuja's power situation is different from Lagos. NEPA/EKEDC cuts are less frequent in many districts, but when they happen they can be severe. A local builder understands:
- How to size a UPS correctly for your build's wattage
- Which AVR and inverter systems are compatible with sensitive electronics
- Local delivery, on-site setup, and same-day support
