CPU Terms
Once you start comparing processors, these words appear constantly.
- Core — an individual processing unit inside the CPU; more cores let the chip handle more tasks at the same time.
- Thread — a single stream of instructions a core can work on; many CPUs run two threads per core to use spare capacity.
- Clock speed (GHz) — how many billions of cycles per second a core runs at; higher generally means faster per-core performance.
- Cache — a small pool of ultra-fast memory built into the CPU that stores frequently used data to avoid slower trips to RAM.
- Overclocking — pushing a component beyond its default speed for extra performance, at the cost of more heat and power.
- TDP (Thermal Design Power) — a rough guide, in watts, to how much heat a chip produces and therefore how much cooling it needs.
- Socket — the slot on the motherboard that the CPU fits into; the CPU and board must use the same socket (for example AM5 or LGA1700).
- Integrated graphics (iGPU) — a basic graphics chip built into some CPUs, letting a PC display video without a separate GPU.
GPU & Display
These terms matter most for gaming, design and anything visual.
- VRAM (Video RAM) — dedicated memory on the GPU that stores textures and image data; more is needed for higher resolutions and detail.
- Ray tracing — a demanding lighting technique that simulates how light realistically bounces, for more lifelike reflections and shadows.
- Upscaling (DLSS/FSR) — clever software that renders a game at a lower resolution then intelligently sharpens it, boosting frame rates with little visual loss.
- Refresh rate (Hz) — how many times per second your monitor redraws the image; 144Hz feels much smoother than a standard 60Hz screen.
- Resolution — the number of pixels a display shows, such as 1080p, 1440p or 4K; more pixels mean a sharper but more demanding image.
- FPS (Frames Per Second) — how many images your PC draws each second; higher FPS makes motion look smoother and feel more responsive.
Memory & Storage
RAM and drives have their own jargon worth knowing before you buy.
- DDR5 — the current generation of RAM, faster than the older DDR4; the two are not interchangeable and depend on your motherboard.
- Dual channel — using two RAM sticks instead of one so data flows through two lanes at once, noticeably improving performance.
- XMP/EXPO — a one-click motherboard setting that runs your RAM at its advertised speed; XMP is Intel's name, EXPO is AMD's.
- Latency — the small delay before memory responds to a request; lower latency means snappier access, working alongside raw speed.
- M.2 — the small slot on the motherboard that most NVMe SSDs plug into directly, with no cables required.
- SATA — an older connection standard used by HDDs and budget SSDs; reliable but much slower than NVMe.
Motherboard & Connectors
The motherboard is where everything meets, so its terminology touches every part of the build.

- Chipset — a controller on the motherboard that determines its features, such as how many USB ports, drives and overclocking options it supports.
- BIOS/UEFI — the firmware menu that starts before your operating system, where you configure hardware settings like boot order and XMP.
- CMOS — a small battery-backed memory that stores your BIOS settings; clearing it resets the board to factory defaults.
- VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) — the motherboard circuitry that delivers clean, stable power to the CPU; better VRMs matter for powerful chips.
- Form factor (ATX/mATX/ITX) — the physical size standard of a motherboard or case, from full-size ATX down to compact Mini-ITX.
- Front-panel header — the small motherboard pins you connect the case's power button, reset button and LEDs to.

Power & Cooling
Keeping a PC fed and cool is its own discipline, with terms you will see on every PSU and cooler box.
- Wattage — the total power a PSU can deliver; you size it to your components, leaving comfortable headroom for stability.
- 80 PLUS (efficiency) — a certification (Bronze, Gold, Platinum) showing how efficiently a PSU converts mains power, wasting less as heat.

- Thermal paste — the grey compound applied between the CPU and cooler to fill microscopic gaps and transfer heat efficiently.
- AIO (All-In-One) — a sealed liquid cooler with a pump, radiator and fans, offering strong cooling without the complexity of custom loops.
- Airflow — how air moves through the case; good airflow brings cool air in and pushes hot air out to keep temperatures down.
- Thermal throttling — when a component gets too hot and automatically slows itself to cool down, protecting the hardware but reducing performance.
Software & General
Finally, a few terms that describe how the PC behaves and how you judge it.
- Driver — the software that lets your operating system talk to a piece of hardware, such as a GPU or printer.
- Operating system (OS) — the core software, like Windows or Linux, that runs your PC and everything you do on it.
- Firmware — low-level software stored on a device itself (such as a motherboard's BIOS) that controls how that hardware works.
- POST (Power-On Self-Test) — the quick hardware check a PC runs the moment it powers on, before loading the operating system.
- Bottleneck — when one weaker component limits the performance of a stronger one, holding the whole system back.
- Benchmark — a standardised test that measures performance, letting you compare parts or check that your build is running as expected.
