The first time you look at a modern motherboard, it can feel like staring at a city from above with no street names. There are slots of different lengths, blocks of tiny pins, metal heatsinks, and rows of connectors crowded along the edges. It looks chaotic. But here is the good news: a motherboard is not random at all. It is laid out like a map, with each zone holding parts that belong together. Once you learn the zones, the whole board suddenly makes sense, and you can point to almost any part and say what it does.
This tour is for total newcomers. We will walk a standard ATX board zone by zone, the same way you would explore a city neighbourhood by neighbourhood. The CPU Area (Centre-Top)
Start in the middle, near the top of the board. This is the busiest and most important neighbourhood, because it is where the processor lives and gets fed. Everything here exists to hold the CPU and deliver clean power to it.
- The CPU socket — the square area in the centre-top where the processor sits. It has a lever or frame that clamps the CPU down. The socket type must match your CPU exactly.
- The cooler mounting holes — four (or more) holes arranged around the socket. Your CPU cooler screws or clips into these, so it can press down onto the processor.
- The EPS / CPU power connector — an 8-pin connector usually tucked in the top-left corner. This is separate from the big main power plug and exists only to power the CPU. Many beginners forget it; the PC will not boot without it.
- The VRM heatsinks — chunky metal blocks running along the top and left of the socket. These cool the power delivery components (the VRM) that convert and smooth the power going into the CPU.
The Memory Zone (Right of the CPU)
Look just to the right of the CPU socket and you will see a set of long, thin slots standing close together. This is RAM territory.
- The DIMM slots — usually two or four tall slots with clips at the ends. Your RAM sticks click into these. They are often colour-coded in pairs.
- Dual-channel pairing — the colours are a hint. To run faster dual channel memory, you fit two sticks in the matching-coloured slots (commonly slots two and four). The manual shows the exact pair to use, so always check it rather than guessing.
The Expansion Zone (Lower-Left)
Now slide down to the lower-left part of the board. This is where you add the big extra components, most importantly the graphics card.
- The PCIe slots — the longest slot, usually nearest the CPU, is for your graphics card. Shorter PCIe slots below it accept smaller add-in cards such as capture cards or wireless adapters. Our beginner PCIe guide explains the different lengths in detail.
- The M.2 slots — small, flat connectors that lie down against the board rather than standing up. They hold tiny NVMe SSDs, which are fast storage sticks no bigger than a stick of gum. They are often hidden under flat metal heatsinks you unscrew first.
Power and Data Connectors (Right Edge)
Run your eye down the right-hand edge of the board and along the lower-right corner. This is the supply-and-storage district, where power comes in and drives plug in.
- The 24-pin main power connector — the largest connector on the whole board, sitting on the right edge. This is the main feed from your power supply and powers the board itself.
- The SATA ports — small L-shaped connectors in the lower-right, usually in a row. These connect older-style hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs using flat cables.
- The fan headers — little four-pin blocks scattered around the board. They are labelled, such as CPU_FAN for your processor cooler and SYS_FAN for case fans. The labels tell you exactly what plugs where.
The Bottom Edge (Front-Panel District)
The bottom edge of the board is where your computer case connects to the motherboard. The pins here are tiny and fiddly, which is exactly why the manual matters most in this zone.
- The front-panel header — a small cluster of pins that connects your case's power button, reset button, and the little status LEDs. These are the most confusing pins for beginners, so see our walkthrough on front-panel headers.
- The front USB headers — blocks that connect the USB ports on the front of your case, so they actually work.
- The front audio header — connects the headphone and microphone jacks on the front of your case.

The Back Panel and I/O
Finally, turn to the back-left edge of the board, the part that pokes out of the rear of your case. This is the side you actually touch day to day when plugging things in.
- The rear ports — the row of USB ports, display outputs, audio jacks, and the network (Ethernet) port. Many boards also include a small BIOS button here for updates and recovery.
- The chipset heatsink — a flat metal cover in the lower portion of the board cooling the chipset, the traffic controller that links everything together. Learn more in our explainer on what a chipset is.
- The CMOS battery and clear-CMOS — a small silver coin battery keeps the board's settings and clock alive. A nearby clear-CMOS jumper or button resets the board's settings if something goes wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to memorise where every connector is? No. The whole point of the zone approach is that you only need to remember the neighbourhoods, not every pin. Every board prints labels right next to its connectors, and the manual draws a full diagram, so the information is always there when you need it.
Why is my new PC not turning on even though everything looks plugged in? The most common beginner culprit is the EPS / CPU power connector in the top-left corner being left out, because it is separate from the big main power plug. The second most common is a front-panel header pin in the wrong place. Both live in zones we toured above.
Are all motherboards laid out the same way? The general zones are remarkably consistent across ATX boards, which is why this map works. Exact positions shift a little between models, and smaller boards squeeze the zones closer together, but the CPU stays centre-top, memory sits beside it, and connectors hug the edges. Your manual confirms the specifics.

If you take away only one idea from this tour, let it be this: the motherboard is logical, not chaotic, and the manual that came in the box is the real map. Every connector is labelled on the board itself, and the manual draws a clear diagram of every zone we just walked. You do not need to memorise anything. You just need to know the neighbourhoods exist and trust the manual to fill in the street names whenever you build, upgrade, or troubleshoot.
