You spent good money on a build with a glass side panel, and yet every time you glance at it you see a tangle of black cables crowding the view. The components are fine — it is the wiring that lets the whole thing down. The good news is that recabling is one of the most satisfying upgrades you can do, because it costs little, risks nothing if you take care, and completely changes how your machine looks on the desk.
Before you touch a single cable, it helps to understand why tidy wiring matters beyond looks. Two Levels of Recabling
There are two distinct jobs hiding under the word "recabling", and it is worth deciding which one you are doing before you start.
- Re-routing what you already have. You unplug nothing permanently — you simply pull cables out of the case's grommets, run them behind the motherboard tray, and tie down the slack so nothing crosses the visible chamber. This costs ₦0 and fixes most messy builds.
- Replacing your cables with sleeved ones. Here you swap the plain black cables for individually-sleeved or ribbon cables in a colour of your choosing, for a genuinely premium, magazine-cover finish. This costs money and demands more care.
If you have never tidied your build before, do the free re-routing first. You may find it is all you needed. Only reach for sleeved cables once the routing is already sound.
The Sleeved-Cable Options
If you decide to go the premium route, there are two paths, and confusing them is where people get into trouble.
- Extension cables. These are sleeved cables that plug onto the end of your existing PSU cables — your original cable stays in place and the pretty extension sits in front of it. This is the easiest and safest option because the wiring to the PSU never changes. The only downside is a little extra bulk at the join, which you hide behind the tray.
- Full custom replacement cables. These remove your PSU's cables entirely and replace them with bespoke sleeved versions — the cleanest result, with no bulky join. The catch is serious: you must buy cables made for your exact PSU model, because the pinout differs between brands and even between models from the same brand.
That last point is non-negotiable. A modular PSU has detachable cables on its side, and it is tempting to assume any cable that fits the socket will work — it will not. The wrong pinout can push power down the wrong pin and destroy your motherboard, GPU, or the PSU itself. One small accessory makes a big difference: cable combs. These are little plastic clips that thread across individually-sleeved or ribbon cables to hold the wires straight and parallel. They are what turn a sleeved cable from a loose bundle into the crisp, ruler-straight run you see in showcase builds.
The Process, In Order
Recabling is methodical work, not delicate work — but the order matters. Follow this sequence.
- Power down fully. Shut the machine off, switch off the PSU, and pull the wall plug. Press the power button once to discharge any leftover charge before you open the case.
- Mind static. Sleeved cables plus a carpeted Nigerian sitting room generate static easily, so ground yourself by touching the bare case metal, and avoid working in socks on a rug.
- Work one cable at a time. Never yank everything loose at once — you will lose track of what goes where. Unplug one cable, route its replacement, seat it, then move on.
- Do the big visible cables first. The eyesores are the 24-pin motherboard cable, the GPU/PCIe cables, and the EPS/CPU cable at the top. Sort these and the build already looks transformed.
- Route through the grommets and behind the tray. Push every cable through the case's rubber grommets and run the bulk behind the motherboard tray, out of sight.
- Comb and anchor. Fit cable combs on the sleeved runs, then tie everything down using the case's anchor points or a few strips of velcro so nothing sags back into view.
Taming the 24-Pin
The 24-pin motherboard cable is the hardest part of any recabling job. It is thick, stiff, and stubborn, and it sits right in the middle of the glass-side view. Do not fight it. Bend it slowly and progressively, working the bend in over several gentle passes rather than forcing a sharp crease. If you are using a comb, fit it after the bend is roughly set so it locks the cable into the shape you want. Patience here is the difference between a clean sweep and an ugly kink that ruins the whole front face.
Building for the Photograph
The payoff for all this work is a build that looks deliberate from the front of the glass. Aim for three things: visible runs that are parallel and combed, cables that disappear into grommets exactly where they should, and zero slack on show — every loop of spare length hidden behind the tray. A symmetrical, uncluttered front face is what makes a build photograph well, and it is worth fifteen extra minutes of fiddling to get there.
Timing helps too. Recabling is far easier when the case is already open for another reason, so it pairs naturally with a case swap into a new chassis or a general build refresh. Frequently Asked Questions
Will sleeved extension cables hurt my temperatures? No — if anything they help, because the act of recabling clears the airflow path. The slight extra bulk at the join sits behind the tray, well away from the components that need cool air, so it has no meaningful effect on cooling.
Can I reuse the sleeved cables from my old PSU when I upgrade? Only if the new PSU is the identical model. Custom and modular cables are tied to a specific PSU's pinout, so moving them to a different unit risks frying your hardware. When in doubt, buy a fresh set specified for the new supply.
I do not want to spend on sleeved cables — is it still worth recabling? Absolutely. Re-routing your existing cables behind the tray and through the grommets costs nothing and fixes the majority of the mess. Sleeved cables are the finishing touch, not the foundation.

Looks and safety are not in tension — but only if you respect the pinout. Re-route freely, comb generously, and hide every spare centimetre behind the tray, yet never plug a custom or modular cable into a PSU it was not made for. The cleanest build in the world is not worth a fried motherboard, so when you replace cables, match them to your exact PSU model and nothing else.
