One of the most common worries we hear from people importing PC gear into Nigeria goes something like this: "The grid here is 220V, my new parts came from a 120V country, do I need a big step-down transformer before I plug anything in?" It is a sensible question, and getting it wrong can fry expensive hardware. But the answer is more nuanced — and usually cheaper — than people fear. For the modern PC tower itself, you very often need no transformer at all.
This guide cuts through the confusion around voltage levels, the famous little red 115/230 switch, and when a step-down transformer is genuinely required. 240V vs 220V: what Nigeria's grid actually is
First, let us settle the voltage itself. Nigeria's mains supply runs at roughly 230V (it was historically quoted as 220V, and many people still say that, while the modern standard sits around 230V), at 50Hz. In practice the grid drifts: you might measure anywhere from a sagging 180V to a spike well above 240V on a bad day. But nominally, treat it as 230V.
The crucial implication: any device rated for 220–240V is perfectly at home here. That includes virtually all UK and EU equipment, which is built for 230–240V and is directly compatible — no transformer, no adapter beyond the plug shape. So the transformer question only ever arises with gear from 110/120V countries, principally the United States.
The fact that saves you money: modern PC PSUs are universal
Here is the single most important thing most people never get told. The vast majority of modern ATX PC power supplies are universal, auto-switching units. They accept a wide input range — roughly 100V to 240V — automatically, with no switch to set and nothing for you to do. The PSU senses the incoming voltage and adapts.
What this means in practice: a quality PC power supply imported from the US, the UK, or anywhere else will generally work on Nigerian 230V the moment you plug it in. No step-down transformer required for the tower at all. The only thing you need to do is read the label on the side of the PSU. If it says 100–240V (or 100–240V~), you are done — it is a universal unit and it just works here.
This is genuinely the money-saving fact of this whole article. People spend good money on heavy transformers to feed a PC that never needed one, because the PSU was happy on 230V all along.
The dangerous exception: the manual 115/230 switch
Now the warning. Some power supplies — typically older units, or cheaper budget ones — are not auto-switching. Instead they have a small red slider switch on the back, near the mains socket, marked 115 on one side and 230 on the other. This switch tells the PSU which voltage to expect.
In Nigeria, that switch must be set to 230. This matters enormously: if a unit arrives from the US set to 115 (its home setting) and you plug it into Nigerian 230V without checking, you can destroy the power supply — and potentially the components attached to it — instantly, the moment you flip the power on. There is no warning and no second chance.
So the rule is simple and non-negotiable: on any imported or older PSU, physically check that red switch before you ever power on. If you see 115, slide it to 230. If there is no switch at all, the unit is auto-switching and you are fine.
So when do you actually need a step-down transformer?
A step-down transformer (which physically converts 230V down to 120V) is only needed for equipment that is rated only for 110/120V, with no auto-switching and no voltage switch to flip. And here is the thing — that is rarely the PC tower. It is far more likely to be a peripheral or accessory bought in the US.
Use the label as your guide. Read the rating printed on every device before plugging it in:
- Does NOT need a transformer — the PC PSU when labelled 100–240V (just plug in); any PSU with a 115/230 switch set correctly to 230; all UK and EU gear rated 220–240V; laptop chargers, phone chargers, and most modern monitors marked 100–240V.
- DOES need a step-down transformer — US-market devices labelled 120V only or 110V only with no switch: some monitors, desk speakers, printers, and small appliances bought for the US market. On Nigerian 230V these will be destroyed without a 230V→120V transformer.
- The killer switch — any PSU showing a red 115/230 slider: confirm it is on 230 before powering on. Left on 115, it is the most expensive mistake on this list.
So the honest summary is that the transformer question is really about your peripherals and accessories from 120V countries — not the PC tower, which usually looks after itself.
A transformer is not a stabiliser — you still need clean power
One more distinction that trips people up. A step-down transformer changes the level of voltage (230V down to 120V). It does not clean up or steady a fluctuating supply. Nigerian power swings, sags and spikes, and that instability is a separate problem that a transformer does nothing to solve.
