If you have ever opened File Explorer on a Windows PC and seen drives labelled C:, D: and E:, you may have wondered what those letters actually mean. They look like a secret code, but they are really just simple labels. Once you understand them, your computer's storage stops feeling like a mystery and starts making perfect sense.

What a drive letter actually is
A drive letter is simply a label that Windows gives to each storage volume on your PC, so that you and your programs can find it. Every separate area of storage shows up in File Explorer as its own "drive", and Windows tags each one with a single letter followed by a colon.
Think of drive letters as the way Windows organises your shelves of storage:
- C: — almost always your main internal drive, where Windows lives.
- D:, E:, F: and beyond — any additional drives, partitions, USB sticks or external disks.
- The colon after the letter simply tells Windows "this is a drive", not a folder.
That is the whole idea. A drive letter is a name tag, nothing more, and nothing about your PC breaks just because a letter is C rather than D.
Why C is special
C: is the drive where Windows itself, and most of your installed programs, live. It is often called the boot drive or the system drive, because it is the one your computer starts up from. For that reason, you generally do not move it or rename it.
But why C, and not A or B? The answer is history. Long ago, the first two letters, A: and B:, were reserved for floppy disk drives, the thin removable disks PCs used decades ago. When hard drives arrived, they naturally started at the next free letter, which was C. Floppy disks have long disappeared, but the convention stuck, so your main drive is still C to this day.
What D, E and the others are
Any drive letter after C points to extra storage that Windows has detected. These can be all sorts of things:
- A second internal SSD or hard drive that you have added.
- A partition, which is a slice of one physical drive set aside as its own lettered area.
- A USB flash drive plugged into a port.
- An external drive connected by a cable.
- Sometimes a small recovery partition the manufacturer created.
Windows assigns these letters in the order it detects the drives, which is why a second SSD might be D on one PC and E on another. There is no fixed rule beyond C being the system drive.
Why the letters sometimes change
It can be a little alarming when a drive you knew as E suddenly appears as F. This is completely normal. When you plug in a USB stick or external drive, Windows simply hands it the next free letter available at that moment. Unplug one drive, plug in another, and the letters can shuffle around.
Because drive letters are only labels, this shuffling does not damage anything. Your files are still safe and exactly where you left them, even if the letter on the front of the drive is different from last week.
One physical drive, or many?
A common point of confusion is whether D: means a whole second drive or just part of your first one. Both are possible:
- Partitions on one drive — a single physical SSD can be split into two or more lettered areas, so C: and D: might actually live on the very same disk.
- Several physical drives — alternatively, C: and D: might be two completely separate disks, each given its own letter.

How to assign or change a drive letter
Windows includes a built-in tool called Disk Management for handling drive letters. Here is what you can do with it:
- Give a brand-new drive its own letter so it appears in File Explorer.
- Change the letter of a non-system drive, for example renaming D: to G: if you prefer.
- See every drive and partition the PC has, all in one place.
One important caution: never change the letter of your C: drive, as Windows and your programs expect to find themselves there. Changing it can stop the system working. Letters for D:, E: and other extra drives are safe to adjust.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my files be lost if drive D becomes drive E? No. A drive letter is only a label, so changing it does not touch your files at all. Everything stays exactly where it was, just under a different letter on the front of the drive.
Can I rename my C: drive to something neater? You can change its friendly name, but you should never change the actual C: letter. Windows and your installed programs rely on finding themselves on C, and changing that letter can stop your PC from working.
