There is a difference between Bluetooth that will not connect and Bluetooth that has vanished completely. When the adapter itself disappears from Device Manager — no Bluetooth section, no greyed-out entry, nothing — Windows is telling you it can no longer see the hardware at all. That is a more serious symptom than a stubborn pairing, but on most desktops it is still very fixable, and rarely expensive.
The key thing to understand is where your Bluetooth actually comes from. Before opening the case or touching drivers, rule out the simple causes. These take a couple of minutes and resolve a surprising number of cases:
- Turn off airplane mode — it disables all wireless radios, including Bluetooth, in one switch.
- Restart the PC fully. A clean reboot often re-detects an adapter that dropped out after sleep.
- Check that Bluetooth is not disabled in the BIOS or UEFI. Some boards have an onboard-device toggle that, once switched off, hides the adapter from Windows entirely.
- In Device Manager, open the View menu and choose Show hidden devices, then Action and Scan for hardware changes. A faded or newly reappearing entry tells you the hardware is present.
- Open the Services app and confirm the Bluetooth Support Service is running and set to start automatically. If it is stopped, start it and try again.
Check Power Management Settings
Windows is allowed to switch off devices to save power, and this setting is a common reason an adapter quietly disappears — especially on laptops and on USB dongles plugged into a hub. When the radio is powered down to save energy, Device Manager can drop the entry rather than simply showing it as inactive.
- In Device Manager, find the wireless adapter (and, for a dongle, the USB Root Hub it sits on).
- Open its Properties, go to the Power Management tab, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Apply the same change to the USB hub the dongle uses, then restart and see whether the adapter stays put.
Reinstall a Fresh Manufacturer Driver
If the hardware is detected but unstable, the driver is the next suspect. The mistake most people make is relying on the generic driver Windows installs automatically. For a combo card, you want the proper driver from the wireless-card maker (Intel, for example) or from your motherboard chipset or board OEM, because it is built for exactly your hardware.
- Uninstall the existing Bluetooth and wireless driver in Device Manager, ticking the option to remove the driver software if offered.
- Download the matching driver from the card maker or your motherboard support page in advance — once the wireless is gone you may have no internet, so fetch it on another device.
- Install the fresh driver and reboot.
- If the adapter vanished right after a Windows update, that update may have broken it. Roll back the driver, or uninstall the recent update, and block it from reinstalling until a fixed version arrives.
Reseat the Card or Move the Dongle

Heat cycling, dust, and the bumps of transit and generator-driven power can all loosen a small M.2 card or its tiny antenna connectors over time. A card that is even slightly unseated will simply not appear in Windows.

- Locate the M.2 or PCIe wireless card, remove its screw, then reseat the card firmly in its slot.
- Press the two small antenna connectors back onto the card until they click — these are easy to knock loose and a frequent cause of a missing radio.

Because both radios share one card, a half-dead card can lose one function while keeping the other. The good news is that these cards are inexpensive, widely available, and quick to swap.
