A USB port that has stopped working feels like a hardware death sentence, but most of the time it is not. The vast majority of dead-port complaints we see at our Lagos workshop come down to a Windows power-management setting, a confused driver, or a loose internal cable — all of which you can fix without opening your wallet. Before you write off the port or the motherboard, it pays to work through the causes in order, from the quick checks to the deeper ones.
The single most important habit here is to isolate the problem before you change anything. A scattergun approach wastes time. Step one: isolate the scope
Before touching any setting, work out exactly how widespread the fault is. The answer points you straight at the cause. Test methodically by swapping things around.
- Is it all ports? If every port on the machine is dead, the cause is almost certainly software — a driver, a power-management setting, or BIOS — rather than physical damage to every socket at once.
- Is it the front-panel ports only? If the rear ports work but the front ones do not, you are looking at a loose internal front-panel USB header cable. Reseating that cable onto the motherboard usually fixes it completely.
- Is it just one device? Plug the troublesome device into a known-good port, and plug a known-good device into the suspect port. If only that one device fails everywhere, the device or its cable is the problem, not your PC.
Two minutes of swapping devices and ports here will save you an hour of chasing the wrong fix.
Step two: check Windows power management
This is the most common Windows cause by a wide margin, and almost nobody thinks to check it. Windows is allowed to switch USB ports off to save power, and sometimes it never switches them back on. There are two settings to disable.
- USB Selective Suspend: open your power plan's advanced settings, find the USB settings section, and set USB Selective Suspend to Disabled.
- Root Hub power saving: in Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, open each USB Root Hub entry, go to the Power Management tab, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Repeat for every root hub listed.
Reboot and test. On laptops and power-frugal desktops this single change resolves a surprising share of dead-port complaints.
Step three: reinstall controllers and the chipset driver
If the ports are still dead, the USB driver stack may be corrupted. The fix is to let Windows rebuild it from scratch.
- Uninstall the controllers: in Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click each USB controller and root hub and choose Uninstall device. Do not tick any "delete driver" option. Then reboot — Windows reinstalls them automatically on startup.
- Update the chipset driver: your motherboard's chipset driver governs how USB behaves, so download the latest one from your board maker's support page and install it. This is the layer most people forget.

Step four: rule out overcurrent and too many devices
A USB port or hub will deliberately shut itself down if a connected device draws more power than it can safely supply. This protects the hardware, but it looks like a failure.
- Remove unpowered hubs: if you are chaining several devices through one cheap unpowered hub, the port can be overwhelmed. Plug devices directly into the PC to test, then switch to a powered hub for permanent use with many peripherals.
- Find the greedy device: a shorted or faulty device — a dodgy external drive or a damaged cable — can trip the whole port. Unplug everything, then add devices back one at a time until the fault returns.

Step five: check the BIOS
If software fixes have not worked, restart and enter the BIOS or UEFI setup. Confirm that USB controllers and legacy USB support are enabled — an option that occasionally gets switched off after a settings reset or a flat CMOS battery. If the ports remain stubborn, check whether a newer BIOS version is available, as motherboard makers do ship updates that fix USB controller bugs. Update the BIOS carefully, following the maker's instructions exactly, since a botched flash carries its own risks.

A note for Nigerian setups
Our unstable mains deserve special mention. A power surge or a near miss from a lightning strike can physically damage a single USB port or the controller behind a cluster of them, leaving the rest working fine. If one set of ports died suddenly after a power event, suspect surge damage rather than software. A good surge protector or a line-interactive UPS is cheap insurance against a repeat. Are dead front-panel ports a sign of a broken motherboard? Almost never. Front-panel ports connect to the board through an internal header cable that can work loose, especially after the case has been moved.
