This one causes a lot of needless worry. Every modern graphics card uses a PCIe x16 slot, and PCIe is both backward and forward compatible. A PCIe 5.0 card drops happily into a 4.0 or even 3.0 slot; it simply runs at that slot's bandwidth. For the vast majority of cards the real-world performance loss from running on an older PCIe generation is minimal, often a couple of percent at most. A card can fit, power on, and run perfectly and still disappoint you, because the processor feeding it cannot keep up. Match the Card to Your Monitor
The last sanity check is the easiest to forget. A graphics card is only useful in proportion to what your display can show. Bolting a flagship GPU onto a 1080p 60Hz monitor is largely wasted money, because the panel cannot display the extra frames or the extra resolution the card is capable of producing. Match the card to the screen: a high-refresh 1440p panel rewards a stronger card; a basic 1080p60 monitor does not need one. Drivers and the Physical Install
Once the checks pass and the card arrives, the swap itself is refreshingly straightforward. Before you touch anything, do a clean removal of your old graphics drivers so the new card starts on a clean slate and you avoid the odd conflict. Then power down, unplug, remove the side panel, release the old card's slot bracket and the PCIe latch, and lift it out. Seat the new card firmly into the x16 slot until the latch clicks, screw the bracket down, and connect the power cables you confirmed earlier.
