The power supply is the quietest part of your PC and the one most people ignore until something goes wrong. Yet it feeds every other component, and in Nigeria — where mains power swings, surges and brownouts are a daily reality — it does the hardest job in the box. Knowing when to upgrade it, and what to look for when you do, is one of the smarter decisions you can make about your machine.
There are really only two reasons to replace a PSU, and they could not be more different. Either the unit is failing and needs to go now, or it is perfectly healthy but simply under-spec for something you want to add. Telling them apart matters, so it helps to know how to tell if your PSU is failing and how to run a GPU upgrade compatibility check before you spend a naira.
Reason one: the PSU is failing
A failing power supply is not a maybe-later job. It is the one component that can take others down with it when it dies, so if you see the warning signs, you replace it urgently rather than nursing it along. Watch for these:
- Random shutdowns or restarts, especially under load when gaming or rendering.
- The PC refuses to power on, or starts only intermittently after several tries.
- Coil whine, buzzing or other electrical noises coming from the unit.
- Any burning smell, scorch marks or melted connectors — switch off at once.
- The PSU fan has stopped spinning while the system is running.
- A bulged, leaking or visibly swollen casing.
In Nigeria the stakes are higher than usual. Dirty mains, frequent outages and the surges that follow when NEPA returns put constant stress on a power supply, and a cheap unit that fails can push a spike straight into your motherboard, GPU or drives. Do not nurse a dying PSU to save money this month — the part it kills next month will cost far more.
Reason two: it is just under-spec
The second reason has nothing to do with health. Your PSU works perfectly; it is simply not big enough for what you want to do next. The classic case is wanting to fit a more powerful graphics card that draws more wattage, or that needs a power connector your current unit does not provide.
This is not a fault — it is a planning gap. A 450W unit that ran your old card faithfully may genuinely be too small for a hungry new GPU, and no amount of efficiency will conjure watts that are not there. What to look for: buying for the next five years
Whichever reason brought you here, buy once and buy well. A power supply should outlast two or three other upgrades, so think about the next five years rather than just today. Here is what matters:

- Quality and 80 PLUS efficiency. An 80 PLUS rating — Bronze, Gold and upward — means the unit wastes less power, runs cooler and is usually better built throughout. - A modern standard. If you will run a current high-end GPU, look for an ATX 3.0 or 3.1 unit with the native 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector. ATX 3.1 is designed to absorb the brief power spikes modern cards produce.
- Modularity. A full or semi-modular unit lets you connect only the cables you need, which keeps the case tidy and airflow — and therefore temperatures — better.
- A long warranty. Quality PSUs carry five, seven or even ten-year warranties. A long warranty is a manufacturer telling you it trusts its own build.
Do not cheap out
It is tempting to treat the power supply as the place to save, since it does not show up in benchmarks. Resist that. The PSU feeds every other component, so a poor one quietly puts your entire investment at risk, and that risk is magnified by the kind of mains power most Nigerian homes and offices live with. A quality unit with genuine protection circuitry is cheap insurance against a five- or six-figure repair bill. Buy once, buy well, and buy with enough headroom that your next upgrade does not force a second PSU purchase.
Fitting the new unit
Swapping a power supply is a moderately involved job rather than a quick clip-in. You disconnect everything the old PSU powers — motherboard, CPU, GPU, drives and fans — remove it, fit the new one and reconnect each cable in turn. A couple of habits make it painless:
- Label or photograph each connection before you unplug it, so reassembly is guesswork-free.
- Never reuse the modular cables from an old PSU on a new one, even between models of the same brand. The pinouts can differ and the wrong cable can destroy components.

Can I keep using my PSU if it only restarts occasionally? No. Occasional restarts under load are a classic early sign of a failing or under-spec unit, and in Nigeria's surge-prone supply they tend to get worse, not better. Diagnose it properly and replace it before it takes another component with it.
