You have just unboxed a shiny new PC or monitor, and there they are: a cluster of ports on the back, plus a couple of cables in the box. Two names keep coming up — HDMI and DisplayPort — and it is not obvious which one you should actually use. The good news is that both do the same core job, both are excellent, and for most people the choice is simpler than the internet makes it sound.
At their heart, both HDMI and DisplayPort carry video (and audio) from your computer to your monitor or TV. They are not rivals you must agonise over so much as two good tools for slightly different situations. - Gaming monitor, high refresh rate, on a PC? Use DisplayPort if it is available.
- Connecting to a TV? Use HDMI — it is what TVs are built around.
- Running multiple monitors? DisplayPort often supports daisy-chaining several displays from one port, using a feature called MST.
- Just need a picture on the screen? Either one works perfectly well — grab whichever cable came in the box.

That "no signal" message or that mysteriously sluggish-feeling screen is often just a tired cable.
The fix is straightforward: buy a cable explicitly rated for the version you need. If your monitor supports HDMI 2.1, get a cable rated for HDMI 2.1. The same logic applies to DisplayPort. One last practical note that saves a lot of confusion: the two ports are physically different and shaped so they will not fit each other. An HDMI plug will not go into a DisplayPort socket, and vice versa. So when you are connecting things, you are not really choosing in the abstract — you are matching whatever ports your GPU and your monitor both happen to have.
