A failing fan is one of the most common faults inside a PC, and also one of the easiest to fix yourself. Bearings wear out, blades clog with dust, and eventually a fan starts grinding, slows down, or stops altogether. When that happens, the part of your case that fan was cooling loses its airflow, and temperatures in that zone creep up. The good news is that replacing a fan is a twenty-minute job with a single screwdriver, and you do not need to be a technician to do it properly.
This guide walks through the whole process, from deciding whether a fan actually needs replacing to fitting the new one the right way round. When a Fan Actually Needs Replacing
Not every noisy or dusty fan needs to go in the bin. Often a clean fixes it. But there are clear signs a fan has reached the end of its life:
- Bearing failure: a grinding, clicking, or rattling noise that does not go away after cleaning means the bearing is worn. This is the most common reason to replace a fan.
- It stops or spins erratically: a fan that no longer spins, struggles to start, or speeds up and slows down on its own is failing electrically or mechanically.
- Vibration or wobble: if you can see or feel the fan wobbling on its axis, the bearing has too much play and it will only get worse.
- You simply want better: upgrading to a quieter, higher-quality fan is a perfectly good reason even when the old one still works.
The important thing is not to ignore a dying fan. A dead fan means lost cooling for whatever it was responsible for, whether that is fresh air coming in, hot air going out, or the CPU cooler itself. Left alone, that can push your temperatures up and shorten the life of other components.
Matching the Replacement
This is the part people get wrong, so take a minute over it. Three specs matter more than the brand on the box.
- Size: 120mm and 140mm are the two common case fan sizes. Measure the old fan corner to corner, or count the screw holes, and match it exactly. The mounting holes have to line up with the existing ones in your case.
- Connector: fans use either a 3-pin (DC) or 4-pin (PWM) connector. PWM gives finer speed control and quieter low-speed running. Match what you had, or use a header that supports your new fan's type.

RPM and noise rating are down to taste — a higher top speed moves more air but can be louder. If you are not sure what to buy, matching the original fan's size and connector is never wrong.
Headers and Wiring
Fans plug into fan headers on your motherboard, usually labelled CHA_FAN or SYS_FAN for case fans, and CPU_FAN for the cooler on the processor. That CPU_FAN header is special — leave it empty and your BIOS may throw a warning or refuse to boot, because the board watches it to protect the CPU.
If you have more fans than headers, you have options. A fan hub or a splitter cable lets several fans share one header. This is common in cases that ship with three or four fans pre-installed. Once everything is fitted, set the fan curve in your BIOS or your motherboard's software so the fans ramp up with temperature rather than running flat out all the time.
Fitting the New Fan, Step by Step
Work slowly the first time and it becomes easy after that. The order matters:
- Power off and unplug at the wall. Do not just rely on the switch — pull the cable out so there is no power in the system.
- Ground yourself by touching a bare metal part of the case before you touch any components.
- Unplug the old fan's connector from its header on the motherboard, following the cable back so you know which header it used.
- Note the airflow direction before you remove anything. There are usually two small arrows moulded into the fan frame — one shows the direction air flows, and the side it points towards is the exhaust side.
- Unscrew the fan, typically four screws, and lift it out.
- Fit the new fan the same way round. Intake fans should push air into the case, exhaust fans should push it out. Match the original orientation.
- Screw it in gently. Snug is enough — overtightening can crack the frame or transmit vibration.
- Route the cable and plug it into a header, tucking it away from the blades.
- Power on, confirm it spins, then set or check the fan curve in BIOS.

The Nigeria Factor
Our conditions are hard on fans. Heat and fine dust wear bearings faster than they would in a cool, clean room, which is why fans here often fail sooner than the spec sheet suggests. A few habits make a real difference:

- Avoid the cheapest no-name fans. A ₦2,000 mystery fan from an open market may last months, while a quality fan runs for years. Over the life of the build, the good one is cheaper.

The Airflow Direction Trap
If you remember one thing from this guide, make it this: check the airflow arrows. Fitting a fan backwards is the single most common mistake, and it quietly ruins your airflow. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix fan brands and sizes in one PC? Yes. Your motherboard does not care about brand, and there is no rule that every fan must match. Each fan just needs to fit its mount and plug into a header. Matching brands looks tidier and can sync lighting, but it is purely cosmetic.
My new fan spins but BIOS says zero RPM — is it broken? Usually not. A 4-pin PWM fan plugged into a 3-pin header, or a fan on a splitter, can spin without reporting its speed back. Check the connector type and which header it is on before assuming the fan is faulty.
Do I need thermal paste or any special tools to replace a case fan? No. A case fan needs only a Phillips screwdriver. Thermal paste is for CPU coolers, not case fans. If you are replacing the fan on a CPU cooler rather than the cooler itself, you still do not touch the paste — you only swap the fan that clips to it.
The One Thing to Remember
Replacing a fan is genuinely a beginner job: match the size and connector, fit it the right way round, plug it in, and set the curve. The only real trap is airflow direction, and the arrows on the frame remove all the guesswork.
