You press the power button, the fans spin up, and the screen lights with your motherboard's logo — that familiar splash from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI or whoever built your board. So far, so normal. Then nothing. The logo sits there, the spinning dots stall, and Windows never arrives. This is a different beast from a machine that shows no display at all. Here the board is alive, the screen is working, and POST — the Power-On Self Test — has begun. The problem is that it cannot finish the handoff to your operating system, and it freezes mid-step waiting for something that never answers.
Because the board reaches its splash screen, you can rule out a great many faults straight away. What we are dealing with here is a POST that starts but stalls, and the cause almost always lives in the same short list of suspects. Work through them in order and you will usually find it. Why a PC freezes on the splash screen
The motherboard logo is the moment the board hands control over to a boot device. To do that, it has to detect your drives, poll your USB ports, and read its own configuration. If any one of those steps hangs — a drive that will not answer, a setting pointing at the wrong device, a USB stick the board keeps trying to read — POST stops dead and you stare at the logo. The common causes are:
- Drive detection hang — the board is waiting on a storage drive that is slow to spin up, intermittently detected, or beginning to fail.
- Wrong or lost boot order — the board is trying to boot from a device that is not your Windows drive, or it has forgotten which drive holds the operating system.
- A corrupt Fast Boot state — the rapid-start feature has cached bad data and now hangs the splash on every attempt.
- A faulty USB device — a dodgy stick, an external drive, a hub or a failing port can stall POST while the board waits for it.
- A recent change — new hardware that is not seated properly, a BIOS update that did not finish cleanly, or a setting that was altered.
Notice the pattern: nearly every cause is the board waiting on something. The fix, in most cases, is to remove what it is waiting on or correct what it is looking for.
First move: disconnect every non-essential drive and USB device
This single step resolves more splash-screen hangs than anything else, and it costs nothing but a few minutes. Power the machine fully down, open the side panel, and unplug every storage drive except the one Windows is installed on. Then pull out every USB device — external drives, sticks, hubs, controllers, even your webcam — leaving only the keyboard and, if you wish, the mouse.
The logic is simple. A problematic external drive or a half-failing USB stick is one of the most common reasons a board hangs at POST, because the board keeps trying to read a device that never gives a clean answer. With everything stripped back to the bare boot drive, power on. If the machine sails straight into Windows, you have found your culprit — reconnect the other devices one at a time until the hang returns, and you will know exactly which one is to blame.
Check the boot order in BIOS
If a clean boot still hangs, the board may be pointing at the wrong device. Enter your BIOS — the splash screen almost always lists the key, usually Delete, F2 or F12. Tap it repeatedly as the machine powers on. Once inside, look for the boot or storage section and confirm two things:
- Your Windows drive is detected and listed. If the board cannot see it at all, the problem is detection, not order — a drive that vanishes from BIOS has its own diagnostic path.
- That drive is set first in the boot priority. If an empty optical drive, a network adapter or an old disk sits above it, the board may stall trying to boot something that holds no operating system.

Disable Fast Boot and clear CMOS
Fast Boot skips parts of the normal startup to shave seconds off your boot time. When it works, it is lovely. When its cached state becomes corrupt — and a sudden power cut is a classic trigger — it can hang the splash on every attempt. While you are in BIOS, find Fast Boot and turn it off. Once Windows loads, switch off Fast Startup inside Windows too, under the power settings, so the two cannot reintroduce the same fault.
If you cannot get into BIOS, or the hang persists, clearing CMOS resets every BIOS setting — including a bad Fast Boot state — back to safe defaults. With the machine off at the wall, either move the CLR_CMOS jumper on the board for a few seconds or remove the small silver battery for a minute, then replace it. This is also the cleanest fix after a setting change or an interrupted BIOS update has left the board confused.
Reseat the boot drive and suspect a failing one
If the board still cannot reliably detect your Windows drive, the connection itself may be at fault. Power down, and reseat the boot drive — for a SATA drive, that means firmly reconnecting both the data and power cables at each end; for an M.2 SSD, unscrew it, lift it out, and press it back fully into its slot. A connection that has worked loose will produce exactly this kind of intermittent, maddening hang.
If reseating does not help and the drive is detected only sometimes, you may be looking at a drive that is genuinely failing. A dying drive that spins up slowly or answers inconsistently will hang POST as the board waits for it. At that point, back up anything you can reach and plan a replacement before the failure becomes total.
Why this is so common in Nigeria
Two local realities make the splash-screen hang especially frequent here. The first is power. Frequent cuts and the surge when mains or generator returns can corrupt a BIOS setting or a Fast Boot state mid-write, leaving the board hanging on the next start.
