It is one of the most unsettling faults a PC owner can face: you press the power button, the fans spin up, the RGB lights glow, the drives whirr — but the monitor stays stubbornly black. Everything looks alive, yet there is nothing on the screen. This is not the same as a simple "no signal" cable problem. When a machine powers on but never produces a display, you are almost always dealing with a POST failure — the power-on self-test, the brief check the motherboard runs before it hands control to your operating system.
Understanding that distinction is the whole battle. If the board cannot complete POST, it never even tries to send a picture, which is why no cable swap will help. First, rule out the display and the cable
Before you open the case, eliminate the simple causes. A black screen often has nothing to do with the internals at all. Work through these checks calmly:
- Confirm the monitor is on its correct input source — press the monitor's source button and select HDMI or DisplayPort to match the cable you are using.
- Try a known-good cable. Cheap HDMI cables fail often, and a damaged one can mimic a dead GPU.
- Test the PC on a second monitor or a TV if you have one — this proves whether the fault is the screen or the computer.
- The most common mistake: if you have a dedicated graphics card, plug the cable into the GPU's port at the bottom of the case, not the motherboard's port near the USB sockets. Plugging into the board's output while a GPU is installed gives a permanent blank screen.
If the display, cable and ports are all correct and you still get nothing, the fault is inside the machine and it is time to read what the board is telling you.
Read the motherboard diagnostics — your single most useful clue
This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that saves the most time. Modern motherboards report exactly where POST gets stuck, so you do not have to guess. Look for one of these on your board:
- DEBUG LEDs — four small labelled lights usually marked CPU, DRAM, VGA and BOOT. As the board powers up they light in sequence; whichever one stays lit is the component the board is stuck on.
- A POST code display — a two-digit number that maps to a stage in the board manual. Note the code and look it up.
- Beep codes — older or budget boards beep through the internal speaker; a pattern of beeps signals RAM, GPU or CPU faults.
The logic is simple: the DRAM LED points to memory, the VGA LED to the graphics card, the CPU LED to the processor or its power, and a stuck BOOT LED to storage. Read this first and the rest of the steps below become targeted rather than guesswork.
Reseat the RAM — the most common cause of no POST
If the DRAM light is lit, or you have no debug display at all, suspect memory first. RAM contact faults are by far the most common reason a healthy-looking PC will not POST, and dust or a slightly unseated stick is often all it takes. Power off fully and unplug the machine, then work through this sequence:
- Reseat firmly — open the slot clips, remove each stick and push it back until both clips snap shut. You should feel a positive click on each side.
- Try a single stick — remove all but one module and test. If it POSTs, you have isolated the problem to a slot or another stick.
- Try different slots — move that single stick through each slot to find a dead slot, and check your manual for the correct slots to use first (usually the second and fourth).
- Gently clean the gold contacts with a dry cloth if the machine has gathered dust, which is common in our climate.
Reseat or swap the graphics card
If the VGA LED is lit, focus on the GPU. A graphics card that has crept loose in its slot — common after the case has been moved — will stop POST cold. Power down and unplug, then:
- Remove the card, blow out the slot, and reseat it until the retention clip locks.
- Reconnect the GPU's PCIe power cables firmly; a half-seated power lead leaves the card dead.
- If your CPU has integrated graphics, remove the GPU entirely and connect the monitor to the motherboard's video output. If you get a picture, the card or its power is the fault.

Clear the CMOS
If reseating RAM and GPU changes nothing, a bad setting may be blocking POST. An aggressive overclock, a memory profile your kit cannot hold, or a corrupted BIOS configuration can all halt the board before display. Clearing the CMOS resets the BIOS to its safe defaults and undoes any such setting. With the machine off and unplugged, either remove the silver coin-cell battery for a few minutes, or short the clear-CMOS jumper or button on the board as described in your manual. Check CPU power and the PSU
If the CPU LED stays lit and nothing else has helped, look at processor power and the supply. The CPU draws through the EPS cable — the 8-pin connector at the top of the board, separate from the main 24-pin lead — and an unplugged or half-seated EPS cable is a classic no-display fault after a build or a clean-out. Reseat it firmly. Check too that the CPU cooler is not over-tightened, as excessive mounting pressure can prevent POST on some boards. Power surges and NEPA in the Nigerian context
