You have been typing for an hour. The document looks good. Then the lights go off, the laptop dies, and when you power back on, the work is gone. - Important: once you finish a Save As, you are now editing the new copy, not the original. Further saves update the copy.
Autosave: the safety net working quietly
Autosave means the app saves your work for you automatically, either every few minutes or continuously, without you pressing anything. It is a wonderful safety net, especially where power is unreliable, but it helps to know which kind you have.
- Cloud autosave (such as OneDrive or Google Docs) saves continuously straight to the file in the cloud, so a crash loses very little.
- Local autosave or recovery keeps a temporary backup on your PC, which the app offers to restore after a crash or power cut.
- It runs in the background, so you can focus on the work instead of the clock.
- Be careful: with cloud autosave, your changes overwrite the live file as you type, so use Save As first if you want to keep the original unchanged.
Autosave is a helper, not a replacement for thinking. It is not the same as a proper backup, and it cannot protect you if a file is deleted or a drive fails. Treat it as one layer of safety, not the whole plan.
