Your build runs well, but it looks a little plain — and you have decided it is time to add some lighting. Good news: you can absolutely retrofit RGB into a finished PC. The bad news is that this is one of the easiest upgrades to get catastrophically wrong, and a single mismatched connector can destroy a brand-new lighting kit the instant you power on.
The title is not a joke. The most common way people "melt" their new RGB gear is by plugging it into the wrong header — a mistake that takes two seconds and costs you the whole part. The #1 Danger: 12V RGB and 5V aRGB Are Not Interchangeable
This is the single most important thing in this entire article. There are two main RGB standards, they use different voltages, and plugging one into the other's header will fry the device. Learn to tell them apart before you connect anything.
- 12V RGB (4-pin) — the older standard, usually labelled 12V-G-R-B. It is "dumb": the whole strip or fan ring shows one single colour at a time. The connector is wider, with four pins all present.
- 5V Addressable RGB / aRGB (3-pin) — the newer standard, usually labelled 5V-D-_-G. The blank middle position means one pin is deliberately missing. This is "addressable": every LED can be a different colour, so you get the flowing rainbow and wave effects.
Here is the part that bites people: plug a 5V aRGB device into a 12V header and the higher voltage burns out the delicate addressable LEDs almost instantly. Go the other way and things misbehave or fail too. Always check the printed labels on both the device cable and the motherboard header before connecting. The 3-pin aRGB connector has that blanked pin on purpose — it is there to help you orient the plug correctly, so line it up with the matching gap on the header rather than forcing it.
Check Your Motherboard Headers First
Before you buy a single strip, open your case and find out what your motherboard actually offers. The two questions that matter are: how many RGB headers do you have, and of which type?
- Most modern boards carry one or more 5V 3-pin aRGB headers, and many also include a 12V 4-pin RGB header for older kit.
- Budget and older boards sometimes have only a 12V header — or none at all.
- If your board has no spare header of the right type, you do not need a new motherboard. You need a controller.

Controllers and Hubs: When You Run Out of Headers
A dedicated aRGB controller (or hub) solves two problems at once: it gives you connection points when your board is short on headers, and it lets you sync many devices together. Keep these points in mind.
- A hub draws its power directly from a SATA power cable off your PSU, then drives all the connected devices, controlled by a small remote or by software.
- It also spreads the electrical load. A single motherboard header has a maximum rated current, and hanging too many LEDs off one header can exceed that limit — check your board's manual for the figure.
- If you are syncing fans, strips and RAM together, a hub is usually cleaner and safer than chaining everything onto one overloaded header.
What You Can Actually Add
Once you know your standard, the menu opens up. The golden rule never changes: every part must match your header voltage, or run off a controller.

Keep the Software Stack Sane
Lighting hardware is only half the story; the software is where many builds turn into a headache. Almost every brand ships its own control app, and those apps frequently clash — fighting over the same devices and undoing each other's settings.
Wherever you can, standardise on one ecosystem. Use your motherboard's RGB software, or settle on a single brand's controller, and buy parts that fit that choice. Running three competing apps that argue over your fans is the fastest route to flickering lights and lost patience.
Tidy the Cables Before You Close the Case
RGB cables are thin and there are usually several of them, which makes them easy to leave dangling. Route them properly so they cannot drift into a spinning fan and so the finished build looks deliberate rather than chaotic.
