Few faults are as maddening as audio that crackles, pops, stutters or hisses on an otherwise healthy PC. The good news is that the cause is almost never mysterious — it is usually a loose cable, a driver hogging the processor, a wrong audio setting or a starved USB connection. Work through the causes in the right order and you will land on the culprit without guessing.
The trick is to start with the cheapest, most physical checks before touching software. Step 1: Rule out the obvious physical causes
Before blaming Windows, prove the hardware is sound. A surprising share of crackling is a five-naira cable problem dressed up as a software bug.
- Check the 3.5mm jack: a plug that is not seated fully, or a worn jack, produces intermittent crackle as it loses contact. Push it home firmly and wiggle gently to test.
- Swap the cable. A frayed or internally broken audio cable crackles when flexed — try a known-good lead.
- Move the audio cable away from power cables and the PSU. Mains and signal cables running side by side induce electrical interference you hear as static.
- Test another port or headset. If a second headset on the same port is clean, your first headset is the fault; if every device crackles on one port but works elsewhere, the port is suspect.

Step 2: Hunt down DPC latency (the classic culprit)
If the hardware is clean, the most common cause of crackling is DPC latency: a driver holds the CPU for too long, the audio buffer empties before it can be refilled, and you hear a pop or crackle each time the stream starves. You cannot see this in Task Manager — you need a measuring tool.
- Run LatencyMon for a few minutes while the crackling happens. It names the driver responsible for the highest delays.
- Common offenders are network and Wi-Fi drivers, GPU drivers, storage drivers, and aggressive power-management routines.

Step 3: Reinstall the audio driver and fix settings
A generic or corrupted audio driver, or an unhelpful enhancement, causes its own crackle. Get the audio stack clean and consistent.
- Install a fresh audio driver from your motherboard or laptop maker's site — not the generic Windows one.
- Disable audio enhancements and spatial effects in the sound device's properties; these processing layers often introduce artefacts.
- Set a single, consistent default format, such as 24-bit, 48000 Hz, so apps stop renegotiating the sample rate mid-stream.
- Disable exclusive mode if one app keeps seizing the device and fighting others for it.
Step 4: Give USB audio the bandwidth it needs
USB DACs, audio interfaces and USB headsets are sensitive to how the ports are wired. A crowded controller or a cheap hub can starve the device of bandwidth and cause dropouts.
- Plug the USB audio device straight into a rear motherboard port, never a shared hub or front-panel header.

Step 5: Set the power plan to High Performance
Power-saving features that park the CPU or drop into deep C-states can pop the audio as the processor wakes. Tighten the power behaviour and reduce contention.
- Switch Windows to the High Performance power plan so the CPU does not idle aggressively.
- Close background apps that hammer the disk, network or CPU while you listen or record.

The Nigeria angle: dirty power and ground loops
Local conditions add their own twist. Unstable mains and poorly earthed wiring — common where buildings switch between grid, generator and inverter — can produce a buzz or hum rather than a crackle. A ground loop on badly earthed sockets is a frequent cause of that low hum, especially in home studios.
- Run your PC and audio gear from a properly earthed, isolated setup, ideally on the same socket strip to avoid voltage differences between devices.
