You sit down to work, glance at the bottom of your screen, and there it is — that little globe with no connection, or worse, an Ethernet link that connects, drops, reconnects, and drops again. A wired connection is supposed to be the reliable one, so when it fails it is genuinely frustrating. The good news is that wired Ethernet problems follow a predictable pattern, and most of them are fixable in a few minutes once you know the order to check things.
Before we start, one important distinction: is your connection dead (no link at all) or just slow? Step one: rule out the cable and the port
Always start with the physical layer, because it is the cheapest thing to fix and the easiest to overlook. A cracked RJ45 connector or a cable that has been crimped under a desk leg is one of the most common causes of a flaky wired link.
- Reseat the cable firmly at both ends — the PC and the router — until you hear the clip click.
- Swap in a different Ethernet cable. Cheap cables fail at the connector long before the wire does.
- Try a different port on the router. Individual router ports can die, especially after a power surge.
- Plug the same cable into another device, like a laptop. If it works there, the fault is in your PC, not the cable or router.

- Several Realtek 2.5GbE drivers have had similar issues. Updating to the newest release is the key fix here too.
For a controller like the I225-V or a Realtek 2.5GbE chip, do not assume the problem is hardware until you have tried the very latest driver. The improvement is often immediate and complete.
Step three: turn off the power-saving settings
Windows can quietly switch off your network adapter to save power, which on a desktop you almost never want. Two settings are the usual culprits, and disabling both fixes a surprising number of "random disconnect" complaints.
- In Device Manager, open your adapter's Properties, go to the Power Management tab, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- In the Advanced tab, find Energy Efficient Ethernet (sometimes called Green Ethernet) and set it to Disabled.
Energy Efficient Ethernet is a particularly frequent cause of drops on 2.5GbE adapters, so turn it off even if the power-management box was already unticked. These are the two changes most likely to stop an intermittent link in its tracks.
Step four: reseat or replace the network card
If the driver and power settings have not helped, look at the hardware itself.
- If your Ethernet comes from an add-in card, power down, open the case, and reseat the card firmly in its slot.
- If the onboard Ethernet is genuinely dead, you do not need a new motherboard. A cheap USB-Ethernet adapter or a PCIe network card — both available for a modest ₦ — will get you back online immediately.

- Restart the router and modem, then watch for a few minutes.
- If the connection works but is slow rather than dead, the cause is different — that is an ISP or congestion issue, not a broken Ethernet port.
